Clayton "Bud" Collyer first portrayed the Man of Steel in this second episode of the Adventures of Superman radio series, broadcast on February 14, 1940. The episode ("Clark Kent, Reporter") was the first of a serial involving a villain known as "The Wolf."

The episode's opening narration is most likely the only version of the Superman legend in which Kal-El grows to adulthood while the rocket travels from Krypton to Earth. He adopts the name Clark Kent at the suggestion of a stranger and is hired as a newspaper reporter by Perry White (voice of Julian Noa).

This radio program, like most radio shows of the era, is in the public domain. As with the previous episode, there are some occasional audio dropouts.

  • I have figured out that the man who is rescued with his son Jimmy is voiced by John Stephenson. Stephenson is best known as the voice of Mr. Slate on the Flintstones, and as Dr. Benton Quest on about the first six episodes of Jonny Quest (Don Messick took over in the remaining episodes).

  • How did he learn English?

How did he survive in the rocket? In the vacuum of space? Until adulthood?

  • @DannyPhantomBeast He's very clever.

  • @DannyPhantomBeast he's super, he doesn't learn, he knows

  • Why question how he grew up..during his trek to Earth or how he learned english or acquired his super costume? Let's just accept this radio interpretation of the character's origin.

  • Wonderful!!

I grew up with the radio show in the 40s. I've never forgotten Collyer's voice. It was perfect for both Clark and Superman (high and low), and it's still my favorite.

    Thanks much.

  • Gosh I had this on cassette as a kid, I loved it.

  • This is pretty cool.
