Arirang is a Korean folk song and this Jeongseon Arirang is the original form of Arirang and has been sung in for more than 600 years. The words used in Arirang song are ancient native Korean words. This is the most famous Arirang version in Korea, especially in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province which is the origin of this version.

This is the lyrics of Arirang and the English translation is taken from Wikipedia.

한글:
아리랑 아리랑 아라리요
아리랑 고개로 넘어간다
나를 버리고 가시는 님은
십리도 못가서 발병 난다

Romanization:
Arirang arirang arariyo
Arirang gogaero neomeoganda
Nareul beorigo gasineun nimeun
Simnido mot gaseo balbyeong nanda

English translation:
Arirang arirang arariyo
Crossing over Arirang Pass
Dear who abandoned me (here)
Will not even walk even ten Li (about 4 km) before his/her feet hurt

Arirang performance in this video was taken on August 2010, when I was attending Korean Summer Class in Seoul National University, Seoul, South Korea. They who performed this Arirang were Ms. Cho Eun-Gyeol and Ms. Hwang Na-Ri, both are the students of Department of Music Seoul Nat'l University majoring Korean Traditional Musical Instrument. The muscial instrument played by Ms. Cho Eun-Gyeol in this performance is called Gayageum (가야금) with 12 strings.

  • Just now I am starting to upload this beautiful folksong sung by Hibiki as a soloist of the Vienna Boys´Choir in January 2009 in South Korea...:)

  • I don't mean to crash the party or anything but this is actually not Jeongseon Arirang. It is one of the newest, easiest, and most common versions of Arirang known as Seoul Arirang, Gyeonggi Arirang, or there's a few other names for it as well. Jeongseon Arirang is a much older, longer, and more difficult to learn version though very famous and highly respected in Korea. So you may have learned about Jeongseon Arirang first but then practiced the more "standard" Seoul version.
