In a July 12, 2011 hearing before the House Armed Services Committee's Readiness Subcommittee, Rep. Joe Courtney asked Navy officials about the need to prevent layoffs in the submarine production workforce at Electric Boat. The officials responded that Electric Boat workers are a vital to protecting the Navy's ability to maintain and repair the fleet, and that they are working with the industry to ensure that those yards facing workforce reductions can assist with workload gaps in other public shipyards. They also stressed that Electric Boat workers will play a key role in addressing emerging workload needs in the next 6-12 months.
