VERY COOL footage of QANTAS' innaugural flight from Sydney to San Francisco in 1959, featuring the carrier's first 707, "City Of Canberra".

Only SEVEN of the super-short (The shortest of ALL 707/720/C-135/137/E-3 variants) were built, and look more like a 737 on steroids than a 707!

In 1959, the only way the JT3C powered 707s could fly from Australia to California non-stop, was to shorten the fuselage, and reduce passenger capacity, weight, etc.

Watch for a nice, smoky take-off too. :-)

Ever wonder why there is no "U" in QANTAS???

Actually...there is:

Queensland

And

Northern

Territorial

Air

Services

  • The 707-138 was not capable of nonstop trans-Pacific flights, even when converted to fanjet engines as the -138B. San Francisco-Sydney flights made stops in Honolulu and Nadi, Fiji.

Qantas bought six new -138Bs as well as converting the seven -138s', so a total of 13 short-body 707s were built - Qantas called them V-jets.

  • Thanx for posting, wish to see more old footage like this about qantas.

  • That particular flight was the first trans-Pacific flight using the Boeing 707

  • its amazing how far the airline industry has come. it was 15 hours to get there by 707 by now its only 10 hours!

  • Another beautiful upload!

  • Gotta love those smoky takeoffs, like the F-4 phantoms in 'Nam
