In general the Repubs do want less regulation...that doesn't mean they want no regulation and in this case, they were the ones who wanted more.

Heck, Google "McCain Letter Demanded 2006 Action on Fannie and Freddie" if you don't believe me. What specific regulations did McCain want gone in 2000?
