In the Japanese tea ceremony, the actions and movements of the tea master follow a meticulously codified ritual. The responses of the guests also follow a set pattern : a humble bow when accepting the tea bowl (茶碗, chawan), a careful rotation and visual appreciation of the hand-crafted tea bowl, an apology to other guests for receiving the tea before them, a reverential savoring of the tea .. the overall aim is to create a serenely contemplative atmosphere.
The candle-lit ceremony shown in the video was conducted by a tea ceremony teacher in the tea room (茶室, chashitsu) of her private home. This event was part of the welcome activities kindly arranged by our former neighbors during our return visit to Japan. 日本の友達にはいつも家内がお世話になっています (Our Japanese neighbors are always very kind to my wife).
