World Cup Final 1990 Argentina-West Germany (English commentary)

The most controversial and scandalous final in World Cup history. West Germany, the best team of the tournament deserved to win the title, but not this way. The refereeing looked so blatantly biased that it raises up many questions and suspicions even after 20 years. It was a dreadful game because of the Mexican referee, and a disgrace to football in every possible way. Argentina had 4 key players suspended, thus Bilardo was forced to use very defensive 5-4-1 formation so the game was bound to be boring. Argentina 1990 team has a bad reputation but at least you must admit that their defense was extremely solid and tough. Germany got only one shot on goal in this game. This composition doesn't have much footage of the actual game because there was very little football actually played.

The Germans were a disgrace with the play acting and diving in this dreadful final.

A German got Paul Gascoigne booked in the semi-final against England by diving when Gazza never actually made contact - this affected Gascoigne for the rest of the match as he was ruled out the final. I think the Germans did the same here against Argentina to wind them up as well - and it worked.

While there is some truth to what you said, if the Argentines were at FULL strength and Maradona played like he did in '86, the Germans would not have the game on a dubious penalty kick.

The Germans played well the first half, but then resorted to play acting and Voeller definitely was playing for the penalty call. Even Brehme said after the game, that that was not a penalty.

Of course, Argentina did not help themselves by not attacking more in the second half.

Seems a lot of people here thought Germany should have won, just because!

Argentina had to go through Brazil and Italy to reach the final, two tough teams.

Just as Germany had to go through the Dutch and the English to reach the finals.

If the Argentines played at full strength in the finals, Germany would not have won that easily. Its unfortunate Argentina had to rely on playing too defensively though.

The commentators did make some valid points. The penalty was very questionable and Voeller 'played' for the penalty kick, otherwise this game would have went into extra time.

While Germany where the better team here, they resorted to a lot of play acting in the second half of the game.

Argentina only made it worse by not attacking more in the second half.
