In the early 1900's many Santacrocesi immigrated to the United States. A few families went to Brooklyn, New York but the majority settled in Paterson and Hackensack New Jersey. Most of them were young, unskilled and without much education. However, they all shared the same dream of opportunity and a sense of adventure. As the number grew in 1916, two societies were formed, one in Paterson and one in Hackensack these societies served a big purpose for all the members.
Besides maintaining the traditional customs and culture, most of them married within the Santa Crocese clan.
In tough times the societies were the center for mutual assistance. All the early immigrants had one thing in common, they believed in education, and no matter how hard they worked or sacrificed their children had to go to school.
The results are 2nd and 3rd generation of Santa Crocesi who make the entire Santa Crocese community very proud.
The Societies continued to prosper and function until the 1960's. As the membership got old, the" Torch" was not passed on and the Societies broke up.
However, in 1972, a group, some from Paterson and some from Hackensack organized a committee to celebrate the annual St. Joseph's Feast.
By 1974, there was enough enthusiasm and a bigger number of friends that a new society was formed and incorporated.
The Society has since grown and comprises more than 200 members, in its headquarters in Hawthorne, New Jersey. The Society is very active and looking to the future. Mario I. Ferraro, President

  • Does anyone know where in Hawthorn this club was located back in 1935 to 1938? I believe my dad used to deliver his father's wine to this place.
