BEFORE YOU COMMENT I KNOW THAT THE ACETONE IS NOT ACTUALY DISSOLVING THE POLYSTYRENE, IF IT WAS THERE WOULD BE NO SOLID (OR LIQUID) MASS LEFT OVER. WHAT IS ACTUALY HAPPENING IS THE NON-POLAR ACETONE IS FORCING THE AIR OUT OF THE POLYSTYRENE PACKING PEANUTS TO MAKE A COLLOIDAL SUSPENSION OF POLYSTRENE.
IT IS SIMPLER TO SAY DISSOLVING THAN WHAT IS ACTUALY HAPPENING.
In this video I am going to show you how to dissolve packing peanuts (polystyrene) in acetone. First go outside and put on some safty goggles. Now pour some acetone into a glass or metal container. Now simply add in some packing peanuts, they should dissolve immediately in the acetone and form a goopey plastic.
If you put the liquid plastic in a mold and let solidify it will make a very hard plastic. The only catch is that the acetone inside of plastic will evaporate and form pockets inside of the plastic that will weaken the plastic.
When you dissolve the packing penuts you make a flamable plastic it burns with a orange flame and makes lots of black smoke and soot. When the plastic finished burning it left a very hard black residue that I was unable to get off of my metal tray.
Thanks for watching!

@thegodofchemistry yes it does, i forgot to mention it in the video...I think gasoline actualy work better than acetone though....

The packing peanuts are not actually dissolving. Its just the air in the packing peanuts escaping and leaving behind polystyrene without air.

@TheChemtube I know, its just simpler to say dissolving(:
