do you have to soak the entire wick for first time use? even the top part?

Thank you I never have thought about how to do this. I thought you just lit it. Again thanks...

Globe, Chimney, Shade, are ALL correct terms depending on your region - jeesh. I'm sure if you asked 100 English speaking people, you would find even more names. Relax, there's no test.

...and did you know by cutting these wicks anything but straight across you will cause incomplete combustion of the fuel, pushing the fuel particles into the room which will smell and make the flame smoke (you may not notice a smell with refined lamp oil though).

Great video! Did you know that you can also cut the top of the wick into other shapes to get the desired flame? If you cut the wick like the point of a triangle, for example, the flame will be that shape also. I bet this video has really helped people, and saved a lot of chimneys from destruction by a spiking flame!

@24602400 HI, I collect kerosene lamps, and that glass piece he removed is called a chimney. Not a globe. Sorry it took so long for anyone to tell you. But it is a great video though!

THAT WAS A LAMP GLOBE OR CHIMNEY.
Let the oil sit in the lamp for a few hours and it will soak up the wick.
