This is a demonstration of the classical japanese martial art Shinto Muso-ryu Jodo. It is a clip from the "Nihon Kobudo"-series(google it) featuring SMR.

Shinto Muso-ryu was founded roughly 400 years ago by Muso Gonnosuke. History states that Gonnosuke was defeated in a duel with Miyamoto Musashi. After his defeat he had an insight and created techniques for use with the quarterstaff (128 cm. staff called Jo). Legend states he returned and defeated Musashi in a rematch.

The whole Nihon Kobudo SMR-video features Omote, Chudan and Okuden kata series, (about 12 kata each), though this clip features one kata (tachi otoshi) from the Omote-series.

The performers are Namitome Shigenori (staff) and Otofuji Ichizō (sword).

  • True masters... I pray that my form could become as strong and confident if I practise for 20 more years... thanks for posting these vids, I'm between dojos right now and they serve as excellent benchmarks for solo practise

I am envious! Not that I'm really complaining about my own Sensei(s), but still, Nomitome rules! :D

    Hey there!

I'm sorry if this is one year too late, but the sensei in white is "Otofuji Ichizo" sensei. He is described in the clip-description.

  • this is high class budo.....does anyone know the sensei in white....awesome

  • Very good! SMR <3

  • a great place to get jo staves is kingfisher woodworks. They make excellent bokken, so the jo staff i just ordered should be top notch, too. Pricy, especially the hand cut weapons, but worth it imho. Practiced kashima shinto ryu, shinto muso ryu and bujinkan for many years. The jo is definitly my fav classical weapon, more so than even the sword. I hope my form ends up as good as these lads. Thanks for the post!!

  • Ah ok! Just checking :)
