Test running a 6V71 Detroit Diesel engine. 2 Stroke, Supercharged Diesel engine. May build a hot rod pulling tractor with it. The sound is not right recording video with a camera. Very loud.

  • Just to clarify a couple of things written earlier regarding the difference between a 6-71 and 6V-71. The connecting rods are different and so is the blower. Also, it's a common misconception that they will not start without the blower. They start just fine. I've done is several times. What they won't do is rev up or make any power and they smoke a lot too. The smoke comes out of the intake just as much as the exhaust. It looks pretty odd. Excellent comments.

  • I bought it as a core and the history was unknown. It has large industrial bell housing so it was not from a truck, boat or bus. After I got it I realized it had been completely rebuilt so I started it up as shown in the video. Of course it took some work to start up. As is typical the injectors were stuck. Never attempt to start a DD that has been sitting for some time without a thorough inspection. I looked up the serial number once and believe it was from the mid 70s.

  • The 6-71 inline had a head start. GM had been making the 6-71 inline for about twenty years before they came out with the 6V-71s in 1960. The inlines always out sold the Vs by about 2 to 1 but the Vs are by no means rare. They made a lot of them. The 6V-71 was more compact and few hundred pounds lighter.

  • 2-stroke+diesel=something beautiful

  • I have a detroit 92 with blower and turbo on an old peterbilt dump truck frame the cab was burned out but the motor is in good shape even after sitting for 6 years. Now Im familiar with 6.2 and 6.5 GM diesels and there is a solenoid to give enough fuel to idle on the top of the block but this motor has no such thing the runaway flap is open and on the top of the motor are two throttle tangs but no solenoid like the gm, how do I keept the engine idling? thx for any help you can provide!

  • That's a rather small engine, it should fit in an 86 F150 wouldn't you think?

  • @JGMagoo I meant offered with turbos in later years. The turbocharged versions still used the gear-driven roots blowers (sometimes called exhaust scavengers) in conjunction with the turbos. Later versions used a "blower-bypass valve that completely bypassed the roots blower and let the engine run in 100% turbocharged mode at higher RPM's. The roots blower was still nescessary for starting, as the engine will not start without it.

  • Yes, both the 6-71 inline and the 6V-71 were offered by Detroit Diesel in later years.

The 71-series engines have never really had any main bearing problems, so either engine is a good engine.

The main advantage to either engine is in packaging....short, but wide for the 6V...or narrow, but long for the 6-inline.

  • @JGMagoo I'm assuming the inline-6 has a stouter bottom end due to the extra mains despite the longer crankshaft. Was there a turbocharged version of the 6V-71 or did they turbocharge the Inline-6 model?

  • @FujiR500 The 6V-71 was almost as common as the inline 6-71. They both used the same pistons, liners, blower, rods, injectors, valves, and had the same displacement and the same horsepower ratings. The V-6 was a more compact (shorter length) design and was very commonly used in all types of transit busses and many trucks. The main advantage to the inline version was that it had 7-main bearings instead of the 4-main bearings of the 6V.
