Alan once said she feared discrimination in Japan (not that she said she actually faced it).

She never fears discrmination in China and never has to hide her Tibetan roots. I think China is actually quite tolerant of minorities, as long as they are loyal to China.

How can a minority who seeks to re-define his or her country not incur the wrath of its people? Hard.

One of the best deeds of the mainland Chinese govt is the promotion of standard spoken Hanyu, Putonghua. China definitely needs Putonghua to unite all the people more intimately, to exchange ideas, to erode clan mentality. Diversity should be based on individualism, not clan divisions.

Canada is too ashamed to impose at least bilingualism on Quebec. It allows French nationalism, linguistic exclusion, to persist. A govt must make its claim on a unifying language while it is tolerant of other languages. A central govt should not be too afraid to exert its influence on all as a unifying force.

The guilt of usurpation of a continent leads Canada to denying the need for a unifying language, for example. White Canadians are too ashamed to be nationalistic at all, minorities don't have any intense feeling of nationalism.

The Chinese public love their ethnic celebrities, as long as they are not separatists.

Those who toe the line of "diverse but united" flare well according to or even disproportional to their talent.

China is a country that is wise toward minorities. Promoting assimilation while proclaiming diversity; of course, separatism will incur the wrath of the country, most every country, except those too shameful to exist as one, like Canada.
