Actually, although JR Freight calls this an electric multiple-unit train, in reality, the central cars are unpowered, while the first two cars on each end are powered while also carrying one container each. Presumably, the advantage of this design over a conventional train is that the weight of the motive power is spread over a larger area, which reduces vehicle-rail impact loads.
