  • The power supply is an ATX computer power supply that is converted to run standalone.

It runs off the 5v line, which can source a max of 25amps. It uses less than that, for sure.

I put enough turns that it wont trip the current overload protection circuit in the power supply. More turns are better, since the bigger limiting factor is that the coil gets hotter with fewer turns.

  • awesome! im trying to electro etch my knife blade right now in a batch of salt water.

  • Yeah I thought this may work for knife blades if you wanted a "signature", but etching with a printable resist in a conductive bath would probably be way more professional looking.

    Thanks for the comment!

  • Just for help others, I used a bobbin made with 22 AWG wire. I have tested with 150 and 350 turns, 150 works better. A core made of laminated steel, (6x6x45 mm) and an adjustable power supply. It starts to spark with 3 V and marks are smooth until 8V. The peak current was 7 A. Thanks a lot !!

  • -What is the power of your power supply? How many Amps and Volts ? Do you have some idea of how many turns did you put in the bobin ? What is the wire AWG ? Thanks !!
