Said Tawiyyeh, 59, is a Palestinian refugee in Lebanon and has been a Palestine Red Crescent Society medical volunteer for 27 years, including during the Civil War.
Nahr el Bared is a Palestinian camp in Northern Lebanon, where the Lebanese Army battled an armed group called Fatah al Islam for almost four months, between 20 May and early September 2007. An estimated 400 people died in the fighting, and the vast majority of its 40,000 inhabitants had to flee to the adjacent Beddawi Palestinian camp or to other locations in Lebanon.
Said Tawiyyeh was injured by a bullet to his neck during the first night of the fighting, while on duty in a clearly marked PRCS ambulance, which was trying to evacuate nine injured civilians. He returned to work two days later and volunteered throughout the conflict.
When a conflict breaks out, it usually results in the disruption, abandonment and even destruction of all or part of a national health system. The risk of epidemics increases and the civilian population may suffer from psychological traumas.
The ICRC seeks to reduce death, disease, suffering and disability in war by ensuring access to health care.
