"Jedermann" is a play by Hugo von Hofmannsthal based on the medieval morality play "Everyman". Written in 1911, it is performed every year at the Salzburg Festival. The Swiss composer Frank Martin (1890-1974) set to music six monologues from Hofmannsthal's "Jedermann" for baritone and orchestra between 1943 and 1949.
In the sixth and final monologue Jedermann finally reaches hope, as the tonality of the music edges toward C Major.
O ewiger Gott! O göttliches Gesicht!
O rechter Weg, o himmlisches Licht!
Und hast all unsre Seele erworben.
O eternal God! O visage divine!
O path of righteousness! Celestial light!
I cry to thee in this last hour,
My lips utter a deep lament.
O Saviour mine, our Maker beseech,
That He show me grace in the last hour,
When the hellish fiend doth appear,
And death the cord of life doth sever.
Then may my soul His throne approach,
And Thou, my savior, speak for me,
That I may at His right hand be,
That I may walk with Him in glory.
To this end hear my humble prayer,
Since Thou didst die upon the cross,
And all our souls redeemest.

my favourite lieder cycle series on youtube! Do you like the Nystroem song cycle-thing "Sanger vid havet" (1943)? I am now listening to the piano-voice version, but there is also an orchestral one, as you may well know. It'd be an awesome cycle to recieve the sort of treatment you gave this wicked Martin dealio. ;)

Thank you so much for your comments. It's nice to find someone who appreciates the Martin cycle as I do. I'm afraid that I am not familiar with the Nystroem cycle but will have to check into that based on your enthusiasm.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed. That Cole painting is a wonder, isn't it? I must say I found this series a very interesting exercise.

Thanks again! This is the final monologue, six in all. This has been a very interesting and intense series to work on.
