On the 8th October the Voi Elephant Keepers rescued a two year old calf whose mother is believed to have been poached. This short film tells the story of Emsaya's rescue.
@betsue68 it's true that there is that risk, but elephants need to be in their natural habitat, free and independent from their human keepers. i think it would defeat the purpose of the organization if all the orphans that are captured are kept in captivity for the rest of their lives. also, dswt does a lot of community outreach, education, and poaching patrols to try to combat the poachers who are slaughtering the elephants.
I agree with "PatLukes", these are wonderful people to help sustain the elephants. But I can't help wondering why they capture these elephants to raise them and return them to the wild where they might be slaughtered like their mothers were. I donate to this organization myself, but I hope my orphan isn't returned to the wild to be killed!
