We must continue a shuttle program of some sort in till we can protect ourselves from objects such as Apophis that can strike Earth from space. But there is to much money to be made in war and not enough to be made by science i guess so we will keep pissing away our resources in the Middle East in till it is to late.

@robert3392 I believe it's sparks to help it ignite and prevent fuel from building up and then suddenly igniting. They dont want a large buildup to occur at the bottom so the sparks prevent that.
