Bhutan celebrates royal wedding

The tiny Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan has pulled off a huge royal wedding.

In a colourful Buddhist ceremony, broadcast live across the Himalayan nation, King Wangchuck has married his longtime girlfriend Jetsun Pema.

The day was as much a coronation as a wedding, as the king bestowed on Jetsun Pema, a commoner, the Crown of the Queen of Bhutan.

Outside the palace thousands scrambled towards the venue for the post-wedding entertainments.

For many Bhutanese, this was an occasion of a lifetime, and they just did not want it to finish just yet.

@RayKalmNiam not true..the bhutanese, burmese, and thai people are their own distinct selves..they're not a mix of chinese and indian...that's total BS! to the ignorant person, that might seem like it...but the language and culture is very different to chinese and indian culture...it's only the religion(BUDDHISM) that binds these countries to India since the buddha was Indian himself. also, the reason why many bhutanese have a slight indian accent is b/c many indian teachers teach in bhutan

@peglud been living in bhutan for decades and even a century. some say, the bhutanese govt was getting scared since the nepali bhutanese were multiplying(in population)...so the govt was afraid the nepali minority would overtake the bhutanese majority soon. also, the nepali bhutanese speak nepali(as opposed to bhutanese) & most are hindus(not buddhists)..so basically, a lot of cultural differences!

@peglud it's bhutanese of nepali descent(called BHUTANESE REFUGEES...many are now settled in America) who are hating on the royal couple because they hold a gudge against the current king's father who was responsible for throwing out bhutanese of nepali descent out of the country...i don't know much about it but i've read briefly about it. the bhutanese govt justifies throwing them out on the grounds that they were illegal immigrants but the bhutanese of nepali origin insist they have

@peglud in bhutan, property(land) is passed down to the woman.women are treated well. they aren't prevented from going to school & pursuing a career(if their family can afford to).

it's a buddhist country and most buddhist societies treat their women well.
