toasty, it's the failure to understand our involvement, and hence responsibility (yes Bush/Cheney regime) that drives fundamentalistcrazypeople to hate us. So I'm glad we agree about the regime...I sometimes forget how populist my POV is. No nation/state/tribe/region in the Middle East is isolated: religiously (SHIA/SUNNI) and certainly not culturally. So action in Afghanistan, warmongering in Iraq, friendShip with Israel - spills over. UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES is the term used most often.

Well, i apologise for not my lack of diplomatic skills, but that is rather the point, isn't it? . What happens to those of us disinclined to involve ourselves in participatory politics? Or to the undiplomatic amongst us? It sounds to me as though you favour a system of "base democracy" - in other words the rule of the self-elected, which isn't democracy at all, but simply the dictatorship of the self-righteous. I trust those who crave wealth better than those who seek power.
