One of my all-time favourite Cohen tracks - this version is a slightly ropey audience recording from Copenhagen in 1972. I love the arrangement of the women's voices at the end of this one. I'm awaiting the DVD of Leonard's legendary Isle of Wight performance of this song with much anticipation!

  • This would be track number 1 on an album of Alternative Leonard Cohen Greatest Hits. Also on the album: Dress Rehearsal Rag, Leaving Greensleeves, Take This Longing, The Partisan, Avalanche and Lady Midnight. I can't wait to get the Isle of Wight album for Christmas.

  • Great selection of tracks, couldn't agree more. I'd chuck in Diamonds in the Mine and A Bunch of Lonesome Heroes as well ;)

  • "I'm awaiting the DVD of Leonard's legendary Isle of Wight performance of this song with much anticipation! "

    - and it's edited! Murray Lerner strikes again! (see his "The Who: live at the Isle of Wight" DVD for the real butchering job)

  • I know :( I was so disappointed.

  • Cool! Pictures too! I actually thought that was a picture of Adam at 3:13.

  • lol! The resemblance is quite marked there...

  • wow what a really meaningful tune, ive only just found about about leonard cohen and I can't stop listening to him!

  • @grumpyandrews

I thought that on video at least, only Suzanne survived from the Isle of Wight '70 Cohen set. The edits here are clearly from some other song as verses are missing from the 4mins.15 secs post I've seen here.

  • a timeless song. Just like almost anyone of Cohen's song. Thanks for posting this version.

  • My favorite single LC performance is of this tune at Isle of Wight 1970 (on the Songs of Love and Hate lp). Am I to understand from the posts that the entire Isle of Wight set will soon be available on DVD? I hope its not the same edit version of this that is currently posted on youtube.

  • The sound quality does not matter. The "feel" is more important. Surely any recording of Leonard from the 70s is important. BRILLIANT.

  • wow. this is fantastic. thank you so much!
