  • Bert was certainly a firecracker back in the early years of GL. Papa Bauer sure could set Bert straight. Papa could wasn't affraid of telling his wayward daughter-in-law what he felt.

  • Bert Bauer was sure a "Bitch" in the early days of GL.

Papa Bauer certainly had wonderful words of wisdom for the cunning Bert. Now I know where Irma Philips modeled "Lisa Miller" from ATWT. Bert and Lisa are a lot a like.

  • It didn't sound Brooklyn to me. She was born in New Jersey, though. Plus, she was YOUNG in this episode...depending on when this was aired, 1953, 1954, 1955...she was in her early '30s. The character became the inspirational town matriarch character until the late '60s. I would say after Bill was written off in 1969 in a plane crash...that's when Bert started to become the Bert most people are familiar with. She turned 50 in 1972 and at age 61 in early 1984, she did the leg amputation story.

  • You have to love Irna Phillips hiding her blatant recycling of storylines by having the characters talk about "following patterns."

  • Bert's change was gradual. Beth's came out of nowhere.

  • I wish there were classic episodes of that other great Procter & Gamble production,THE EDGE OF NIGHT. I watch the shows from 1979 but they're hardly my idea of 'classic' just old. LOLOLOL. But I am grateful for anything that reminds me of the glory days of the soaps. Thanks for posting.

I agree...the show isn't the same without Bert...I LOVED seeing a fiesty, younger Bert...I love my matriarchs and patriarchs, but I also love seeing them with a little fire--makes they're characters more layered, and a tad more interesting

  • My mother remembers when Bert was a nag. When I started watching GL as a child (in the late 1960s), Bert has already matured into the matriarch we loved. We wished that Bert were still with us. GL has not been the same since Charita Bauer's death in 1985.

  • She's so selfish and insensitive. and what's with the Brooklyn accent? Not the Bert I always knew. Extreme changes in character is common the soaps. Beth Rains is a perfect example.

  • Hey don't forget that Alan-Michael Spaulding is also a "Bauer." Papa Bauer is his Great Great Grandfather, Bill is his Great Grandfather (Ed is his Great Uncle, whose real full name is William Edward Bauer Jr.,) Bill's son Michael is his Grandfather, Michael's daughter Hope who became an Alcoholic is his mother and she was the last of Alan's Wives to give him a child. There are now Five Generations of Bauers on the show.
