The 15th Century Ross Castle sits on the shores of the Lower Lake or also known as Lough Léin meaning "the lake of learning".

Built by the O'Donoghue chieftains, in 1652 it was one of the last stronghold in this region to surrender to Cromwell's forces. The now restored 15th Century Ross Castle allows for a real glimpse of ancient Ireland at its finest.

Legend has it that O'Donoghue Ross still exists in a deep slumber under the waters of Lough Léin. On the first morning of May every seven years, he rises from the lake on his magnificent white horses and circles the lake. Anyone to catch a glimpse of him is said to be assured of good fortune for the rest of their lives.

The castle is located on the outskirts of Killarney town and is opened to the public. There is daily guided tour available. Ross Castle is easy accessible so you can take your car, cycle, walk or one of the most popular ways to visit is by jaunting car.

Ross Castle is also a hive of activity with numerous people enjoying outdoor life on and off the water, with fishing, kayaking, rowing, traditional boat tours as well as covered over lake cruises. A popular family activity at the castle is to feed the numerous ducks and swans. This is a must place to visit when in Killarney.
