Is any deep breathing good for our health? Could deep breathing exercises cause pain and health problems? Thousands of people search Google every month trying to find answers to their pains, chest pains, anxiety, and many other problems due to ... deep breathing.

They say, "Take a deep breath. Breathe deeply". What about 10 or 100 deeper breaths? How to practice deep breathing exercises? Should we breathe deeply or more air 24/7?

We do know that breathing should be abdominal or diaphragmatic. But is it good to breathe as much as possible?

Over 95% people believe that automatic breathing pattern (our unconscious breathing) at rest must be deep 24/7. They say that it is better to breathe more air thinking that our cells get more oxygen.

However, not a single medical study have proven this. On contrary, thousands of studies showed negative effects of overbreathing or hyperventilation on our health. Sick people with various health problems (heart disease, asthma, diabetes, bronchitis, chronic fatigue, etc.) have deep breathing pattern 24/7, but their body oxygenation is below the norm.

Numerous studies found that heart patients get chest pain, anxiety and other health problems only after 1-2 minutes of deep breathing (hyperventilation). These negative effects are due to low CO2 in the blood.

Breathing of healthy people at rest is shallow (diaphragmatic but very small). It is invisible and inaudible, but oxygenation is normal or even high. Dr. Artour Rakhimov (NormalBreathing.com) discusses the main paradox of breathing.

  • go hyperventilate for 10 minutes and see how you feel. Or, alternatively, force deep breathing for a day and see how you feel.

  • @Fupper16 Hatha yoga masters breathe less than typical westeners.Dr Buteyko taught how to retrain your breathing -to breathe less AND increase body oxygenation.Artour Rakhimov's teaching is in line with the view of chinese philosopher Lao Tsu,"The perfect man breathes as if he is not breathing"This is the basis of Eastern understanding of breathing!

  • Let's give this misleading half-baked video some context:

You breath slower and quiter BECAUSE you are healthy not the other way round. Just like an athlete has a slower pulse because he keeps exercsising and eating healthy. An unhealthy body NEEDS the extra oxygen. And until the lunges and body are adjusted to less oxygen deep breathing techniques will help to cope.

    Please stop spreading rubbish ideas.

  • ARTOUR I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @maxwellpassion How can you assert that Easterners are not hiding anything? How can you be sure they want to share information? There is information that I've been privy to that no American knows of, and they don't want to share it because all Americans care about is fame, money, and glory. They would take chi and market it for millions. And that's simply not how chi works.

  • very nice work ,thank u for ur information, wish they put these kind of programms instead of American idol and co.

  • @Fupper16 Easterners aren't keeping anything hidden. They would greatly give information to us if it was good information. No country is that evil. It's just we don't agree on what's 'good' (different religions, ways, practices) ... We're all trying to put in our helpful comments and bring positivity to the scene of the world, and help everyone find that blissfulness that can be easily respectfully shared. Idea's with self worth attached to them hurt everyone when it's time to expand.
