this is the "Flat Rate " way to do a 3.8 liter upper and lower intake manifold set. as you see it is not necessary to take off he serp belt, alternator or tensioner assembly to remove the lower manifold. I recomend having someone help when it is time to reinstall the manifold because it can be tricky to lien up the coolant elbow and not mess up the lower gaskets when reinstalling. Note that it is recomended to disconnect the negative battery cable when doing any major repairs. This video is just to show some guys that said that a lower manifold cant be pulled in way less than 20 minutes, I know that I went over that , but I had some stuborn injectors and Im a little out of practice. If you are going to do this yourself and you are not a professional I recomend that you follow the procedure in a service manual

  • once you get the upper off it should not take but another 10 min to get to the lower off , id recommend doing the lower also

  • to the best of my knowledge gm doesnt have a part number for the sleeves , they only come with the doorman upper intake plenum, kit.

  • @BMAN1104 I went ahead took off the lower, too, and the gasket did look like it was beginning to crack up a little. I used the Fel-pro "problem solver" kit. Getting those 90 degree tubes in was kind of tricky. Probably should have greased the o-rings, but no leaks. The upper plenum must have been done before because it was in good shape and had the EGR tube installed. The torque specs that I found said 136 inch lb for the lower and 89 inch lb for the upper. Is that right?

  • @BMAN1104 Got the old one off. Looks like this may have been done before. No coolant under it but a fair amount of oil. Also, there is a nick or scratch in the gasket right where I saw the coolant/oil that caused me to start this in the first place.

  • My intake is showing just a little coolant and oil on top of the lower manifold in the back behind the upper manifold so I'm planning to take it off and change it if it's bad or just get the problem solver kit if it's not. If I see no major problems, do I still have to change the lower manifold gaskets?

  • The the EGR issue is a well know problem with all Series II, 3800 (3.8). I just finished tearing mine appart to correct this problem.

  • Sleeves are with the replacement manifolds only. Which should be replaced anytime you do an intake anyways, since they have a really high rate of failure. And just remember, anytime you do the intake gasket on a 3.1/3.4/3.8 get the problem solver kit from Fel-Pro, that way the replacement gaskets are metal instead of plastic. That way you won't have an issue with the intake leaking for a long time.

  • @BMAN1104 How much longer do you think it would take with a 3800 SC. I am just wondering as i recently bought a 2004 Buick GS and don't have any issues yet. Hopefully I'll be one of the lucky ones and not have trouble

  • What is the part number for those intake sleeves?
