MATTAPOISETT, MA — A local couple were found dead Thursday afternoon inside their Tallman Street home, and police are investigating.
The Plymouth County District Attorneys Office identified the victims as Joseph Battistelli, 78, and Shirley Battistelli, 74, both of 6 Tallman St.
Joseph Battistelli was found in the basement, and appeared to have hanged himself and to have suffered a gunshot wound, according to Bridget Norton Middleton, spokesperson for the Plymouth County District Attorney.
Shirley Battistelli was found dead on the first floor of the home. Middleton declined to say what appeared to be the cause of her death. Middleton also declined to say whether the deaths appeared to be the result of a murder-suicide. She said there was no sign of forced entry into the home, and that there was no threat to the public.
Mattapoisett police received a call at 2:09 p.m., reporting that two people were found dead in the residence. Mattapoisett officers entered the home, found the couple and secured the scene until state police detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorneys Office arrived.
Middleton said autopsies will be conducted by the office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the exact cause and manner of the deaths.
On Thursday, Mattapoisett and State Police blocked off both ends of Tallman Street while they investigated the crime scene.
