On a recent trip to Altoona, we'll watch as a pair of these 20-cylinder behemoths lift a loaded coal train over the west slope of the Allegheny Mountains. They are certainly interesting to watch!

  • Very nice quality video what cameras are you using.

  • @nhernick Sony HDR-XR200

  • why are they always on the coal trains, r they that heavy?

  • @MrZkr123 Not so much because the trains are that heavy, but the SD80MACs are best suited for drag-type freight trains.

  • Has any of the NS ES44ACs been seen in PA?

  • @tarmac2001 Not that I know of.

  • @MrZkr123 So well suited that Norfolk southern has them in captive service on the South Fork Secondary coal branch and the C90 coal train between South Fork and Altoona.

  • they are insanly heavy, surprised the rails can hold, even a bridge!!! lol

  • One more thing, the SD80MAC's are the biggest EMD Power on Norfolk Southern & CSX, I think. Hopefully I am right.

  • Ahh, those 5000 horsepower beasts. Those are all Ex-Conrails. NS #7210 is the Conrail Home Page of a website of NSDash9.com. Message me about it, anyone can about the website. Nice SD80MACers!!!! (lol)

  • Listen to that pure EMD power! Amazing vid! Those things are gems!

  • Very well made video. :D

  • @MrZkr123 SD80MACs are used on coal drags because of the AC power is better suited to low speed drag freight than DC power is, but having 5000 HP also helps move long coal trains through the mountains.

  • Awesome yeahhhhhhhhhh chingonsssiii mo sd80mac greettings from mexico

  • Whoever came up with the "TOP GON" logo on those coal hoppers has a great sense of humor. Thanks for sharing - great work!

  • Those are monsters
