There was an interview with Cheryl after the season was over and she talked about how he had been sick. She told him he didn't have to continue if he didn't want to but Wayne wanted to keep going.

I give Wayne a lot of credit for doing the show with sever Pneumonia. Cheryl was such a doll to him and they are so sweet. They are also still good friends.
