La Esencia de mi Madre is a black and white film fusing drama and dance with Spanish and English narration. The 10-minute short is an artistic film about the loss of a parent as well as of ones childhood. The film explores sense memory, the protagonists relationship with her deceased mothers scented shawl. The protagonist travels home to bury her mother and finds her most prized heirloom, the torn shawl that still carries her mothers scent.
Another theme that the film possesses is the relationship between past and present, the shawl being the link between the two realities that bleed into one another throughout the film, as if existing simultaneously.
La Esencia de mi Madre takes place in Mexico although it was shot in both Vancouver and in Mexico City. Because the story is based on Mexican born Canadian, Salome Diaz, it was appropriate to shoot in both of her countries.
The films strong images, carefully- crafted montage, haunting musical score and Diazs riveting performance equals visual poetry as local artist, Jabbar Al Janabi puts it.
