Some could claim that Elmo killed mr Hooper and Jim Henson but elmo's original concept (in the 80's and very early 90's) was not bad it wasn't until the mid 90's when Elmo became the domination of Sesame Street and the show went downhill.
This is why I love Sesame Street so much, especially back then. It strove to teach kids not just the alphabet, but life lessons as well. Growing up, I always felt like Big Bird was right on par with me and that Maria, Bob, and the rest of the grown ups would have all the answers. And, even in situations like this, they did. I'm so glad Sesame Street respected kids enough to tell them the truth about the death, instead of having Mr. Hooper "move away." Sesame Street nurtured kids in every way.
I just barely remember this episode when I was five years old at the time and now at 31, it still brought tears to my eyes, That just goes to show you how "real" everyone's character was. It was the most emotional event ever on this show and the writers did a great job on dealing with this loss for the kids to teach them about it. Poignant though.
