The board of supervisors in Santa Clara County have voted to ban the promotional toys that come in McDonald's (NYSE:MCD) Happy Meals, according to a New York Times report.
The board wants to ban the toys until the food that comes in the meal meets certain nutritional standards, which are based on federal standards and recommendations from the Institute of Medicine.
According to the president of the board, Ken Yeager, the new law would level "the playing field by taking away the incentive to choose fatty, sugary foods over healthier options."
The law is the first of its kind and would allow restaurants to give away toys as long as the meals included don't contain excessive calories, sodium, sugar or fat.
Yeager added, "This ordinance does not attack toys. Toys, in and of themselves, do not make children obese."
A McDonald's spokesperson said that the company is disappointed by the board's action and added that the Happy Meals do provide many important nutrients including zinc, iron and calcium.
amazing, I got happy meals with toys when I was a kid and I didnt turn out to be a fat ass as an adult. Maybe it was because my parents didnt take me there 10 times a week and maybe it was because my parents made me get off my ass and go outside instead of watching gay cartoons and playing video games all day. But yeh how dare Mcdonalds corrupt our young children and their lazy parents.

Fresh vegetables are harder to digest and can cause more gas(even smellier farts). Would this negatively impact the atmosphere? Maybe I should apply for a federal grant to research McFarts & set up a methane offset company with Gore.

What they need to do is ban unhealthy foods from being purchased with welfare. It really irks me that I have to pay for these jerk's super size bag of chips. When I used to work at walmart, I had a customer buy a pallet (a whole pallet) of pepsi and pay for it with a quest card. Then I have to pay for health care for the fat jerks when they get diabetes.

Once again government is telling us what we can and can not from a restaurant. One step away from a dictatorship. If we give in to this, then what's to say something else will come along and take something else away from us? Give me a break... Happy Meals DO NOT CAUSE A CHILD TO GET FAT. So why take the toys away? The PARENT chooses what their kids can eat. I hope McDonald's fights this in the courts and I hope if they do that they win.
