A little groove / melody inspired by the vibes of the amazing Robert Glasper who I saw here in London last week - I hope you like the vibes.

  • This tune is great Mike, love the melody, strong but a bit obscure

The fast solo is spot on, transition back to the groove was a bit sudden tho, I guess it's hard to program a change like that, maybe some short quiet section or just few bars of those warm 'pitch bendy record' sounds before the groove kicks back in??? back in the old days people like Weather report would just splice 2 different takes and cover the join with a crash cymbal, but they liked to cheat.

    loving this tune

  • @HARRADMUSIC thanks bro - I know what you mean about the transition after the solo - I still want to develop this tune both by adding vocals (not sung by me but a good singer, preferably female) and musically - just got me a new iMac so hopefully the music can start flowing again now... glad you dug the music tho - it's the way I want to go - got another new tune cooking too, it's sounding good.

  • Great stuff. I know it may be too complicated to breakdown, but what's your 'thinking' when playing these scales and runs, what modes/arpeggios are you doing here and on a lot of your jazzy stuff. Thanks!

  • @stoob1969 yes it is hard to say but it's a combination of things - first of all harmony/melody - I'm a very ear-led player so I'm aiming to follow my musical instincts as much as possible - and not let the technique or theory get in the way too much. On the solo here I'm working over the chords which are G# minor, C#minor, Emaj, F#7 - and I use scales and arpeggios, melodic 'cells' of notes and lots of passing tones/accidentals - but hopefully linking all of these ideas musically....!

  • What kind of bass is that?

  • @stridegum1213 it's a Sei bass - pronounced 'say' - made by London-based luthier Martin Petersen - see the seibass dot c o m - they are superb instruments

  • @ijazzmunki Awesome, thanks for the information, it's great to play musically led of course, but this means breaking through all the theory first :o) Thanks again!
