@Mutleytech Mounting them within the bogie frame lessens the axle weight a lot. If on axle shafts they would be carrying that weight which has the knock-on effect of increasing track loading and wear....

Why couldn't the traction motors be directly put onto the axle shafts in a transverse configuration therefore eliminating the driveline?

Components designed for 160mph. In real life service never above 125mph. What a waste!
