Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts Regiment Memorial sits in front of the State House on Beacon St. in Boston. Robert Gould Shaw commanded the 54th Regiment - perhaps the Union's first free all black regiment. Although he was initially unenthusiastic about his assignment, the dedication of his men deeply impressed him, and he grew to respect them as fine soldiers. On learning that black soldiers would receive less pay than white ones, he inspired his unit to conduct a boycott until this inequality was rectified. Video produced and copyright 2009 for http://democraticvistas.primarysource.org/ to help teachers introduce American art to students. Gifford Video Productions is located in Newton / Boston Massachusetts.

  • @warfare1917able Yes. But just as you said, they are heroes; Not forgotten and will always be remembered in our hearts. As Denzel Washington said, "I love the 54th".

    I agree with him.

  • @1977seabiscuit that thoses heroes end up like that dumped in the ocean

  • @1977seabiscuit thats sad

  • just rented this from the library

  • @staclynn72 The 54th lost the battle of Battery Wagner and were buried in a mass grave outside of the fort. Because of years of Atlantic hurricanes eroding the beach at Morris Island the bodies were eventually washed out to sea; They are no longer located on the Island.

  • What happened to the bodies of the black men of the 54th?

  • It's a very impressive memorial. If you're ever in Boston do see it. It's on the Boston Common.

  • @785tt9gh Uhm just check your history books .

  • why is that the black people was not allowed to fight?
