@carmodifire Then, Ali told him that he would fight with his back against the ropes to prevent being taken down! He had great ring IQ. I just wish that Ali's team hadn't changed the rules, because he got his legs kicked so bad and never scored another KO, but beat the hardest puncher ever, even in his old age.

@korvstopparen Very true. I thought that Toney would do OK, because a boxer must counter at first opportunity against an MMA fighter, and Toney is a great counterpuncher. But I like it when someone disrespects the sport and then loses. As for Ali, I remember that he went to Joe Lewis (the one who trained under Bruce Lee) and Ali challenged him in preparation for the Inoki bout. Lewis got his legs, but didn't do anything because he didn't want to embarass Ali in public.

In my eyes Ali would do fine in mma (with crosstraining ofc).
For me Ali, Floyd and Roy Jones had the best styles for mma, fast on there feet
and with a good sprawl they would be hard to take down.
On the other hand Toney would never do well in mma not even in hes prime.
Toney just had a style when he stood infront of you (a great defensive fighter)
but that dosent work in mma when you have takedowns.

@korvstopparen It is more complex, but in MMA, you can shift the game to your own area. In boxing, it's always stand up. MMA is jack of all trades, boxing is being a master. Also, Ali was in the 'Golden' era of HW's, he beat 2/3 top ten ATG's in history, by stoppage, and some of them past his prime. But, Ali didn't use technique, just God given talent. I wonder how Ali would do in MMA? He controlled everyone in clinches, was pretty big for a HW, GOAT chin.

Well mma is a much younger sport, when Ali was fighting boxing had been around for a long time.
Also mma is more complexd since you have groundfighting and kicking aswell.
-
@strigen Not necessarily. Most people still believe that Muhammad Ali would defeat any boxer who ever lived as of yet.

@numerrita Remeber they had no rounds and basically no rules and it was a unpopular freakshow. They had to put fair rules in and rounds for it to develop as a sport. And no one wants to see fighters gas out all the time and they wouldn't be as explosive.
-
@numerrita no.

that generation thing sounds ridiculous. there is no way ppl who spend all thei life time traininig for and experiencing war is trumped by ring combatants(atheletes).
jeeez, so much "Rickson would get beat by XXXX" today.
don't forget that every successive generation of fighters are better than the generation before because they are able to build on the experience/knowledge of those who came before.
That's like saying the inventor of the LED light bulb is better than the inventor of the standard light bulb. It's only because the former is able to stand on the shoulders of those who came before that he can gather that experience/knowledge and run farther.
