Merdeka Special: 1Malaysia in the eyes of the young

In our interview with Yasmin Ahmad days before she left us, she mentioned that the young will be our hope to truly be a race that is colourblind and fits her definition of 1Malaysia. We follow in her tracks and presented a scenario to various groups of youngsters to find out what they think.

Language also plays a vital role. One would not feel comfortable hanging out with a different circle of race if he doesn't understand a word others are saying. he would feel left out.

Plus, these days, the government and the media just aggravates things, separating people based on their political views that are racially biased.

Ignorant people too.

There's no need for silly arguments, fights and attacks. Regardless of our race, religion and believes, we're still human.

Children are not race conscious until the adults started teaching them about it. Youths can mix well together. But they tend to stick to their circle of race because they haven't got the opportunity to mix around other races and get to know them. Sometimes they fear being rejected as a friend by someone from another race.

Basically, youths, specifically young children are not biased and prejudiced but common misconceptions and stereotypes are drilled into their minds by adults.

pertama sekali, al-fatihah to the late Yasmin Ahmad.she left us too soon. The concept of 1Malaysia is totally crap to me.. as we are different. That what makes we Malaysian special mah..

Ianya perlu bermula dari kanak-kanak, mereka perlu bergaul dari awal. Kenapa konsep Sekolah Wawasan tidak mendapat sambutan walhal ianya hanyalah perkongsian dlm satu kaw. dan mengekalkan SK,SJKT dan SJKC. Nasib baik org sabah dan sarawak tak mintak sk aliran mereka pula. Kalau berlaku seperti di Iraq bru kita tau betapa pentingnya keamanan. Waktu itu,kereta mewah dan banglo dah tak bermakna lagi.
