when the light is on....the speakers are off, mine worked fine for a couple of years so it's not about "educating" the port...unless mine is in regression.

@Shanesan well yes... its an audio out port that can be used both with standard 3.5" connectors and with a TOSLINK cable....

@Billmister, hey could you help me, i got my first macbook pro i5 and i have this problem. every time i connect my headphones in, it takes 2 sec or 3 to change from speakers to the headphones and vice versa! please help

instead of spend time on what triggered it, you have applecare, having a new logic board will surely fix that issue. And regarding calling you out on Apple Products, i'm really sure you don't want to make that assumption. As for Mr. Macintosh Expert, u are correct, how did you know my position? Maybe you didn't know, apple store now have "expert positions". If you would like, it would be a pleasure 2 talk about apple products (ALL) and i can almost guarantee u i know more than a typical person.

For those who are looking for help: After a couple of weeks this problem went away for me. Just keep plugging in and taking out and the audio port will be "educated", if you will, to know that it's not seeing what it thinks its seeing.
