Segway and GM partnered to bring us this Personal Urban Motility and Accessibility prototype vehicle. The all-electric PUMA goes up to 35 mph and spins on a dime; the charge has a range of 35 miles, but after a full day of test-rides at the New York International Auto Show, the battery was only about half drained.
Grist's Sara Barz takes a ride in this balancing mobile at the auto show.
Why the windscreen? Bugs in the teeth? 'Cuz it's not exactly weather proof with both sides wide open to the elements...

What if people WANT to drive alone to work?? I'd rather do that than be crammed into a cattle-car public trans bus next to some flu-ridden dude coughing in my face. I understand that it isn't efficient that 77% people drive alone to work, but what are you going to do about it?? FORCE people to drive certain things? Because it won't end with transportation.

The 2007 US Census Results show that according to a one-year American Community Survey (doc. # CB07-CN.06), 77% of commuters drive alone to work.
Most traffic congestion surveys use 1.2 as the average number of occupants per vehicle when planning new road works.
