Had no idea this demo even existed until only a minute or so ago. What an awesome post :D
The sound quality (or lack of it, lol) only adds to the timeless charm of this recording, imo

It's actually some lines from the mass of the dead - "Erue, Domine, animam eius requiescat in pace" (Deliver his Soul, O Lord, May he rest in peace.) The song accompanies Micky's suicide jump at the beginning of the film "Head", but for some reason, they did not include the snippet from the Requiem.

Awesome! Thanks so much for sharing. I love her early work with Gerry Goffin. Road To Nowehere is a killer song as is the flip of this that The Monkees covered "As We Go Along" which Carole wrote with Toni Stern. I never really cared for her songs that made her rich and famous (70's stuff) but this early material is just outstanding.

@soda06 probably a studio splice.

1 person is permeated with the odor of turpentine.

This demo is more fabulous than the finished product. I too would love to hear a cleaned up version, if it's possible.

I'd like to hear Carole King record a cleaned-up version of this song. Voice with only a piano accompaniment, of course.

The Monkees is better. But this is good

@Rawego Nah the Monkees is better

@mprat001 Thank you! I have been trying to figure out what she had been saying for about two hours now!

Wow. One of my favourite Monkees-songs. Interesting to hear her do it her way.
Is this demo what she presented to the makers of the film, or did she record it afterwards?
thank you for posting my acoustic cover of this track as a video response
very interesting demo - didn't Carole also co write As We go Along?

@JoeChrisMorris You're welcome! Yes, Carole King and Toni Stern wrote "As We Go Along", another great song from 'Head'.

Really beautiful demo by Carole King!! Is this really Peter Tork at the beginning? Was he actually at this demo session or was it put at the beginning by another person? Thanks for this!!

@soda06 You're welcome! Yes, that really is Peter Tork. Actually, I put it there as a tribute to GONN, who started their classic 1966 single "Blackout Of Gretely" with the phrase, "The universe is permeated with the odor of kerosene", which they got from Peter Tork on a Monkees episode. Instead of "turpentine", they say "kerosene". It's just a weird, obscure tribute, that's all.
