Despite the rave reviews that some tend to give the few Volvo buses that are operated in Chennai, the sad truth remains that not many people are using the overpriced, infrequent service. The Volvo pricing, which is ten times the minimum ordinary fare, reflects the tendency of Indian transport managers to treat good quality travel as a luxury, not a necessity to get people out of their cars and into buses.

  • Read what IIT Delhi has to say about cost of airconditioned bus services. Over the lifetime of the bus, the additional cost per trip is only half a rupee (Professor Dinesh Mohan, Transportation Research and Injury Prevention Programme, IIT Delhi, 2008). Governments like to spread the myth that these services are costlier. In any case, all over the world, buses are comfortable and climate controlled, because tax-payers deserve that. It's our money.

  • If people can afford to go out in their cars, they might as well be able to afford these buses!. Have you ever thought about the operating cost of such services?.
