Furthermore, the fact that you dismiss the notion of their music as being 'intelligent' is very close-minded indeed (I won't use the term 'snobbish'). If you are unable to identify musical sophistication just because of the form it takes, I'd question your connection with the very 'material' of music itself, which comprises everything from Ravel, to Meshuggah, to Ravi Shankar. Fortunately, music merely exists, without a care for the trivial, bickering opinions that surround it (my own included).

Meshuggah are an avant-garde metal band - why are they even involved in this arguement? I agree that their music comes nowhere close to the sophistication, depth and complexity of Ravel's - however, that is not to say that it is 'unintelligent'. It is very intelligent (and pioneering). They are an influence not just to metal fans but also open-minded musicians from a variety of genres across the globe. There is no point in comparing them to something like this. It's likening chalk with cheese.

That's a great video with a good quality, I know this trio and it's a very good interpretation, very soft and delicate. I like it a lot!

I don't think it cheapens anything. Yes, we practice/rehearse for hours but its the ability to create in the moment during a performance that is the mark of a truly great musician. We do all that rehearsing so we can be spontaneous in a performance.
