The materials looking different is likely a function of the different renderers, and not differing materials.

in my experience Mental Ray gets faster renders. How much experience do you have?
-
This test is bullshit. The shaders are different. Plus, looks like you did not make efficient use of global illumination or final gather in mental ray example.
-
the shaders are different, what does simulation have to do with the render?
-
vray dosent render fluids. and if it does, somebody please tell me how!!!
-
I think the settings you have a bad scene for easy handling of this scene in less than 40 seconds mental ray or vray or software
-
yeah agreed with others, nonsense test. I have been using Mental Ray for a long time and am moving to Vray now. Vray can be VERY slow at times, just as Mental Ray. knowing how to use either well is what makes the speed difference.
-
you need to know how to use correctly both of them to show something. this is crap example!
-
Yup, the Mental Ray render doesn't look like it was using a linear workflow, Vray does.
These two could be a lot closer. Even if they'd look 100% the same Vray is a much better choice.

This test could be a lot better. It needs a control image. When you get the desired look with both engines then say X render got me what I wanted faster. Right now, it's a comparison between two very different images.
the materials are different...
