Steve Weintraub teaches the Yiddish dance Zhok, or Romanian Hora, at Klezkamp 2005. The dance is in 3/8 time and completely different from Israeli Horas. This was part of the "Make Them Dance" class at Klezkamp, co-led by Jim Guttman and Sherry Mayrent (clarinet). Emphasis was on playing klezmer for dance as much as it was on dancing to klezmer
This music cries out with history and heritage. I can see the laborers in the field, the faces of children, the weary and the joyous creating a village and a homeland longing to thrive, at least in their hearts.
I agree with "billygoatmax". A list of the musicians is merited. And I agree with "cellorando" as well. The filming could come in for a closer, more intimate look. It all looks a little static. The Yiddish source does, however, succeed in conjuring.
