I take on the mammoth task of creating an oil painting based on Mel Rubi's stunning cover to Red Sonja Issue # 16.

I have not picked up a brush or a pencil since I left school, so I figure its time to confront some old art based demons, and show the world that I really can paint!

  • Don't tell me you're intending to paint this! I like the drawing, but it's too much details if you wanna apply paints to it. Canvas can get messy if you fill it with charcoal or pencil lines. My suggest is that it's gonna be much more easier and economical if you use this drawing technique on boards or hard cardboards. I love your drawing, well done!

  • Unfortunately I did indeed paint over the pencil drawing! I have to say the pencil version did turn out better than the final painted one, which is a shame. I have improved a bit in pencil drawing since then, although I don't have much time to practice! Check out the follow up videos to see how the final painted one turned out, and thanks for the compliment.

  • How long did it take you to draw it. It'll probably take me about 5 to 6 hours to get it done. By the way nice drawing.

  • the second thing, I think it'll be good for you using underpainting and glazing techniques. This way the painting won't get messy.

  • Let me suggest something, I see you're into details in drawing. So, the best way to do it as a painting is to draw it first on a paper then transfer it to the canvas through carbon paper with clear defined lines, without any scribbling. Then try to use a fixative on it before you start painting. You can use hair spray as an alternative to charcoal fixative. For me, it gives the same result without having to buying an expensive fixative produced by a bunch of arrogant art suppliers.

  • james horner with red sonja! genius! why dosn't anyone else think of this?

  • cool stuff. check my work when you get a chance.

  • Good job on the piece so far, I know how hard it is to pick up the art after not doing it for a while. Cant wait to see the rest of the movies.

Considering the title says "Part One", the paint will be coming along...

  • Wherrrrre is paint :@:(
