testimonials of 31 ft Camano pocket trawler .Heres a new boat were sure is going to generate plenty of interest
among boaters big enough to comfortably cruise just about
anywhere, yet small enough to be easily handled by a couple; fast enough to get
from point A to point B in a reasonable amount of time with plenty of
additional power on demand to handle adverse wave or sea conditions, yet fuel
efficient enough to make that time not cost prohibitive; pretty enough to satisfy
even the most die-hard traditionalist, yet not requiring the excessive upkeep
time so many "character" boats do. And all of this is a high-quality well-built
package. The Camano 28, built by Camano Marine of Delta, British Columbia,
is indeed an interesting boat.
The Camano 28 was designed by Bob Warman to achieve two highly
laudable attributes: a performance, fuel-efficient yacht with a good 12-knot
cruising speed (with even higher speeds up to 20 knots available in a pinch)
and a boat with a good re-sale value. It looks like Bob may have hit the target
right on the bullseye.
First, theres the Camano 28s unique hull design, what Warman calls the
"Keelformī›š Hull" a semi-displacement, variable deadrise, hard chine, flatplaning
hull with a very wide waterline beam and an abnormally large
displacement keel. Performance-wise, this hull shape allows the Camano 28 to
move from displacement to planing speeds with little of the "hump" in the
horsepower curve seen on most displacement designs. In other words, cruise
from 8 to 18 knots without a huge jump in fuel consumption along the way.
There are other assets to the large volume keel besides performance and
fuel efficiency. It also happens to be the perfect place to put the engine
(standard power is a inboard diesel), low,
level and out of the way especially in a boat of this size. The keel, along with
the skeg-protected prop and rudder, also provides excellent protection against
those obnoxious chunks of driftwood we so often run across in Northwest
waters.
Topsides, the Camano 28s slightly rounded fishboat transom and classic
workboat bow and house remind us so much of the trawler-style yachts we so
dearly love here in the Northwest. But guess what? with all her attractive
traditional looks, theres not a stick of wood on the exterior to sand, varnish, oil
or sweat about! Note that the Camano 28 is available in both flybridge and
sans-flybridge models.
The Camano 28 is built with a hand-laid solid glass hull bottom with six
longitudinal stringers. The high stress areas of the keel include carbon fiber
along with mat and roving woven to a thickness as high as 1". Hull sides above
the waterline and all cabin areas use a foam sandwich construction, with glass
content in the cored areas strong enough to stand alone. Fore and aft decks are
built with end-grain balsa.
The interior of the Camano 28 is as open as can be with a forward Vberth
followed by the ample U-shaped galley to port and an enclosed head
(with shower) to starboard. Up a couple of steps aft and youre in the large
main salon with convertible settee and lower helm station. The main salon is on
the same level as the aft deck. All in all, a comfortable cruising package.
