Bike to the future
We raced a bike from the 1950s against one from 2009 to see how modern cycling technology effects performance
Modern time-trial bikes are built with space-age technology but how much faster are they than those ridden by the Tour de France heroes of the 1950s? We got Welsh road bike champion and Rapha-Condor-Recycling rider Dale Appleby to do two time trials on machines from the respective eras to find out.
if he had been wearing the proper cleated shoes with the 1950's bike there wouldnt have been much difference.

no difference, the same legs on pedal.

I bet a 1930's recumbent bike would crush the 2009 bike.

You're right, a time trial bike (modern one) doesn't really shine until you reach faster speeds. The rider should be going at least 45km/h, perhaps 50 km/h.
I would like to see a track bike versus a time trial bike though, interested in seeing how direct drive makes a difference.

is this for fun or intended as a good test to settle some arguements? if so should do a less technical course (flatter and faster) and propperly use the TT bike..35km/hr is quite a slow 10k TT or even for an hour!
