This video, from the Reading Recovery program, discusses what Reading Recovery is, and why it's a low-cost, short term program with long lasting results.
Reading Recovery is a teacher training model, not an intervention program. Reading Recovery IS cost effective because teachers take their extensive training in Reading acquisition and use it with other students in small groups not just in 1:1 lessons. A typical Reading Recovery teacher will work with over 30 students a year! Reading Recovery provides phonics instruction as needed for each child embedded in authentic Reading and Writing not in isolated, scripted programs.
I am a former Reading Recovery teacher. This training is very expensive. Our district only used it for the three years that we received grant money. It was not cost effective to pay a teacher's salary on a one to one instruction where not many students benefited. I am currently a licensed dyslexia therapist. From my extensive studies, I learned that dyslexic students need explicit, intensive phonics instruction. Reading Recovery does not provide this. It may actually have negative results.
This program is wonderful! I had dyslexia when I was 6 I took this program for like a month! I am now 15 and a half and I can read great!! Thanks reading recovery for being the only program. That did not turn their back on me!
You do not "buy" the "program". You (as a teacher) get trained to teach Reading Recovery, and it takes you a few years to get really proficient in teaching this one-on-one literacy intervention. All the "stuff" you get is a bunch of little books, three or four teacher manuals, some magnetic letters, and the rest is paper and pencils...it's not a cash-cow for some company that sells garbage to the public schools (other than the publishers of those little books!) It's life-changing training.
dont give ur kids extra work. i am dyslexic all the programs r a waste of time. all they do is damage. The best thing u can do is get Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9.0. look it up it is the only thing worth doing. Tell your kids that it is nothing to worry about. Not worrying is the only way that dyslexic people can learn

Dyslexia is not a problem. People not understanding is a problem. it is not something u need to fix. u need to fix people understanding.
