The problem with FF9 for most people was probably that it was very different compared to 7 and 8. With 7 the series became famous in the western world. 8 had a similar look to 7. This mix of our present and sci-fi elements. Then came 9 with it's fairy tale look and it's talking hippos and other fantasy creatures. A lot of people considered it childish, which to me it definetily isn't. The story and the charachters are more adult than FF8 will ever be.

Everyone always talks about 6, 7, and 8, but I think 9 is often overlooked. Possibly because of its cartoony artstyle but in many ways it is one of the darkest games of the FF series. All the mechanics are fantastic and it has one of the best scores Nobuo has ever written, the story is amazing. IMO it is the best of the series.

FF9 was the last real Final Fantasy. It dies once they started trying to streamline it. No world map? I mean come on.

it is not that 8 wasn't adult, its theme was just a lot more kept to love than other final fantasies. each one really does just have different areas that the story is strong at

This was a great comment right up until the last sentence. FF9 is my favorite as well but there is no reason to hate on any of the PS1 titles. As a whole, they are all amazing.

Didn't really like ff games except ff12 because of it's deep and smooth combat and well designed open world. The story was really promising at first but halfway through it seemed like I'm just traveling without a storyline. Maybe the dull and boarding characters made me feel that way. The only interesting characters were Bash's twin and epic Balthier. Don't know why ff didn't follow that great combat style.

but 10 is also very linear and the characters are also stereotypical j pop "fags" like people say about 13, for me, 10 and 13 are the most similar games in the series according to the jpop art style

no, ff 7 is great but there are better entries in the series, its only popular brecause its the first ff in 3d
