Scarborough, besides being a very special seaside town and in fact 'The First Seaside Resort that ever was', has so much more to offer. Behind that much loved seaside facade there lives a rich history and a quirky culture of art, music and literature.
We visit both south and north bays dropping in to see Howard Beaumont play organ and piano at the Spa.
There's a steam train in the station from York hauling the pullman vintage carriages of the 'Scarborough Spa Express' Across the road is the famous Stephen Joseph Theatre, home of playright Alan Ayckbourn. Down the road just before we go under the Spa Bridge is the Rotunda museum of geology founded by William Smith here one can see a real neanderthal (I would like to say the ONLY ONE in Scarbourough! ha...ha )
A wander across the beach to the harbour and 'Vincents Pier' to inspect one of the Scarborough Belles about to take a plunge. A sideways glace at a bunch of pirates and we slip away towards Castle Hill and St Marys Church, admiring the spectacular views back across the bay towards the Spa. Having paid our respects at Anne Bronte's grave we climb into the 12th century castle inspect the keep and walk the ancient walls taking in the amazing views from the look-out points. Pre-dating the castle there is a Roman Signal Station right on the tip of the peninsula beween north and south bays!
'Royal Albert Park' leads us onto North Bay with its sweeping vista towards the Yorkshire Moors. When one of the magnificent cruise liners like the Queen Mary 2, choose to pay us a visit its an ideal vantage point! On the way theres the distintive white pyramids of the 'Sea Life Centre' and a lovely old hostelry for real ale drinkers 'The Old Scalby Mill'. This can be reached by train from Peasholm Park our last port of call with its chinese theme pagoda waterfall and boating lake..... There is indeed so much more beyond the seaside town of Scarborough.
The Jazz Festival has achieved great fame and is the very best anywhere! -
There is an abundance of lovely music everywhere and also from the resident orchestra, what a lovely setting and backdrop of sea, sand and Scarborough
'An inspirational place'...... just purr-fect - ENJOY! by feline
